If you’re longing to spruce up your bathroom, but a total overhaul isn’t in the budget just yet, it is possible to make some affordable – but impactful – changes.
Do you have brass light fixtures and brushed nickel faucets? Are your light switch plates and outlet covers a blah, plastic contractor-white? Choose a metal color and update your accents throughout the room to coordinate. Giving lights, mirror frames, outlet covers, faucets and cabinet hardware an update will give them entire room a fresh, updated look.
If you have a large window, ditch the Venetian or roller blinds and update to PVC plantation shutters (not real wood in the bathroom!). The wide louvers will instantly elevate the elegance of your bathroom, giving it a trendy look with a timeless style. If you have an arched or shaped window, plantation shutters can even be custom-made to fit these spaces. The louvers provide total privacy when closed, and can be adjusted to allow light in, or hinged to open completely.
Floor to ceiling drywall on bathroom walls can get dull – and dirty! If tile isn’t in the budget, consider water-resistant PVC wainscot half-way up the walls. Give the walls above a fresh coat of paint that coordinates with the accents and other colors in the bathroom. Easy to wipe down splash-safe, wainscoting is an affordable addition that works in both contemporary and traditional bathroom design.
Textured and opaque PVC shower doors can give a whole bathroom a dated look. If you’re not ready to redo the whole shower, just swap the door with a modern, glass counterpart. This also works if you want to ditch your shower curtain and install sliding glass doors over your tub instead.
The bathroom is a small room, so a flooring update is generally a fairly affordable project and will give the entire room a fresh look. Go modern with slate, classic with ceramic, or embrace the trend of luxury vinyl tile “wood” flooring in the bathroom. Newer technology in LVT has resulted in many waterproof products, allowing you to have a wood floor look in once off-limit rooms like the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and basement.
Even if you’re not gutting your bathroom for a total remodel, most of these projects are still better left to the pros to ensure a job done right.
