At Synergy Builders, we believe that being a successful design-build remodeling company is about more than great projects and satisfied clients — it’s also about how we show up in our community and contribute to the future of our industry. That’s why we were thrilled to recently host 15 Interior Design students and instructor Suzann Nordstrom from the College of DuPage for a day of learning, collaboration, and real-world insight into the design-build process.
The day began with a candid panel discussion featuring Synergy’s owners, who shared their experiences, lessons learned, and perspectives on what truly makes design-build remodeling work. From there, students participated in an interactive “concept board speed discovery” exercise — a fast-paced, hands-on activity that mirrored the creative decision-making and collaboration that happens every day in our studio. We wrapped up with lunch and a group recap, reflecting on key takeaways and answering questions about careers in design and construction.
What stood out most was the enthusiasm on both sides of the table. The students were eager to learn, and our team was energized by the opportunity to share their knowledge and passion. These kinds of exchanges are invaluable — they bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world practice, giving students a clearer picture of what a career in design-build can look like.
Beyond the immediate impact on the students, events like this speak to something larger: the civic responsibility of businesses to engage with their communities. Companies have a unique position to influence and support education, workforce development, and the next generation of professionals. By opening our doors, sharing our processes, and investing time in young designers, we’re not just helping individuals — we’re strengthening the industry as a whole.
In the Chicagoland area, there is a growing need for skilled, thoughtful professionals in design and construction. When businesses like Synergy actively participate in education and workforce development, we help build a stronger, more innovative, and more collaborative future for our industry.
A heartfelt thank you to the entire Synergy team who made this event possible. Your commitment to mentorship, education, and community engagement reflects the core values that make Synergy Builders who we are.
