Lighting Tips For Bathroom Remodeling In Naperville

Bathroom Remodeling In Naperville: Lighting With Layers

Bathrooms used to be simply a place of function, but times have changed. With the popularity of master baths, ensuites, walk-in showers, and free standing tubs, bathrooms have become much more than a place of function. They have become a retreat, a place where we can enjoy a spa-like experience right at home, and a relaxing space to start or end your day.

The problem is, you can’t do that with harsh overhead lighting. That’s where layered lighting comes in. Layered lighting can provide the illumination you need to brush your teeth and do your make-up, just as well as it can provide the quiet light needed for a blissful soak in the tub.

Layers For The Bath

Layering lighting in the bath comes down to three different types: Ambient, Task, and Accent. All three are necessary to create a functional, yet comfortable, bath experience.

  • Ambient lights form the basis for all other lighting. This is the light that comes in through the windows, and is the main source of light in the room, usually overhead or a vanity light depending on the size of the bathroom.
  • Task lights are used to highlight certain areas where tasks are performed. A shower light or lights at a seated vanity are examples.
  • Accent lights draw attention to specific areas or objects. They usually aren’t too functional, but serve more of a décor and ambiance purpose.

Maximizing Light In A Small Spacebathroom remodeling lighting

It may seem like the bathroom is the room of the house with the least need for multiple lighting options. After all, it’s typically the smallest and we don’t spend nearly the amount of time in there as we spend in the kitchen or family room, for example. However, task lighting is one of the most important aspects of bathroom lighting. After all, the bathroom is a room for various tasks. Here are some areas that can benefit from task lighting in the bathroom:

  • Sink and Mirror. Shaving, teeth brushing, hair styling…these are just a few of the tasks performed at the sink and mirror. Side or overhead lights can illuminate the area for these tasks, but overhead lights especially can cast shadows on your face, making them ineffective for makeup application or shaving. Wall sconces can help alleviate these shadows by creating an even balance of light across your face.
  • Shower and Bath. This is another great place for task lighting. An overhead light or the light above the sink won’t provide enough illumination in the shower, unless you have glass doors or a clear curtain and a small bathroom. Overhead shower lights can fix this problem. When combined with a bathroom fan they can remove steam and reduce humidity in the bathroom, too. Another option is recessed shower lights with a clear cover. Recessed wall lights are becoming popular too, particularly for walk-in showers.

To balance out the harshness that task lighting can give off, ambient and accent lights are often used in bathroom remodels. Ambient light can come from a ceiling light, chandelier or pendant. These lights balance the task lights.

Accent lights, on the other hand, draw the eye away from the task lighting to illuminate a special feature or area of the bath. Artwork and areas of architectural interest are great candidates for accent lighting. Accent lights may be wall sconces, track lights, spotlights, or pendant lights, depending on the area you want to highlight.
